Federal Prison Release Paths
No Bureau of Prisons institution was identified in Henderson County. That does not rule out a federal case or sentence. The U.S. Marshals Service can place a federal pretrial detainee in a local, state, contract, or private bed before acquittal, release, or delivery to BOP. Once a sentenced person enters the BOP system, a federal locator and federal records replace HCSO as the relevant release sources.
A BOP episode may end with release to the community, movement through a residential reentry setting, transfer under a detainer, or another status described by the federal record. Federal supervised release is imposed and administered through the federal court and probation system. It is not North Carolina parole. A BOP “Released” row means the person is out of BOP custody. It does not guarantee that every other custodian or supervision term has ended.
Confirm a Federal Prison Release
The official BOP Inmate Locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward. A register number is the strongest search key. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers, or a name with optional age, race, and sex filters.
- Choose an identification-number search when a reliable federal number is available.
- Otherwise enter the full name and add only the identity filters needed to narrow the results.
- Match the register number and personal details before relying on the row.
- Read the displayed location or status and release date exactly as shown.
- Check the federal court docket or supervising office if a post-custody term matters.
The public locator’s layout and released-result format can be reviewed at the official BOP source.

The image illustrates the correct federal search channel. It is not a Henderson County jail roster and does not establish a particular person’s current status without an identity match.
Federal Release Record Fields
A normal BOP locator result may show the person’s name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status. The register number ties the row to the federal correctional identity. A release date may be historical or projected depending on the record context. The label and status should be copied without turning an estimate into a completed event.
| Federal field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Register number | Primary BOP identity and matching key |
| Release date | The date displayed by BOP for that federal episode |
| Location | The reported institution or custody location |
| Released | No longer in BOP custody as reported by BOP |
| Not in BOP custody | No current BOP custody; other authorities may still be involved |
Compare the federal register number with the case and any local holding record. A similar name is not enough. If the BOP row and Henderson record show different dates, determine whether one marks transfer to federal authority and the other marks the end of the later federal sentence. They document different custody events.
“Not in BOP custody” is limited to BOP. It does not prove freedom from local, state, immigration, or federal pretrial custody.
Request Federal Release Records
The locator gives a concise public result. A more detailed federal release record may identify the releasing institution, method, transportation, expected destination, detaining authority, and supervision contact. BOP’s Notice of Release and Arrival form, BP-A0714, contains fields of that kind, but privacy and access limits affect what a third party can obtain.
A focused BOP Freedom of Information Act request should name the person, register number, date range, institution when known, and specific existing document. Ask for a fee estimate and accept redacted, separable portions if appropriate. Do not ask BOP to create a new narrative. A person who was held by USMS but never entered BOP may require a separate USMS FOIA request or court-record search.
Henderson Federal Custody Transfers
A disappearance from the Henderson County Sheriff’s app can mark federal transfer rather than community release. USMS manages many people from a federal detention order through acquittal, release, conviction, and delivery to BOP. It has no public person locator identified in the research. The federal docket, holding facility, responsible USMS district, and later BOP locator form the practical chain.
For a recent Henderson booking, HCSO can state whether the person remained physically held, left for the community, or was transferred to a named receiver. The county booking and release sheet proves the local operational event. The federal docket explains the federal court authority. A BOP result becomes relevant after federal designation. The Henderson County released-inmate record path keeps those records separate and shows how to verify the handoff.
Federal Prison Release Dates
A future BOP date can change. Sentence-credit calculations, court orders, disciplinary effects, new sentences, and federal program rules may alter it. BOP has also warned that First Step Act credit recalculation can affect displayed projected dates. Recheck the public locator and avoid calculating a guaranteed exit date from a sentence length alone.
A detainer may change the destination even when BOP custody ends on the displayed day. The person can be delivered to a state, county, immigration, or other authority. Supervised release can also follow in the community. The federal court judgment and probation office control that term, while BOP controls the prison episode. A past BOP release status confirms only the end of that federal prison custody.
- Projected date
- A forward-looking date subject to federal calculation and later events.
- Released
- A BOP status indicating that the BOP custody episode ended.
- Detainer
- A request or authority that can lead to transfer to another custodian.
- Supervised release
- A federal court-ordered community term after incarceration.
Henderson ICE Transfer Checks
Federal prison and immigration custody use different systems. Henderson County has a documented 2020 HCSO and ICE 287(g) Jail Enforcement Model agreement. That agreement supports a transfer warning, not a claim about any individual or every current practice. If HCSO says ICE received the person, the BOP locator is not the correct primary search.
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator with an exact A-number and country of birth, or an exact name and country of birth. An absent result can reflect spelling, transfer, age limits, delay, or the locator’s recent-release window. A local release entry that names ICE should be described as a transfer. It does not establish a return to the community.
For a federal prisoner whose BOP row changes to Released, check the federal docket for supervised release and any later detention order. If the person first disappeared from the Henderson jail view, ask HCSO Records for the local destination. BOP, ICE, and HCSO each document a separate custody episode, so no single result rules out the other two.
Henderson Facility Release Context
The Henderson County Detention Center opened in 2001 with 222 beds and serves several local arresting agencies. It is linked securely to the courthouse, so movement into court can occur without release. The county’s current Judicial Center Addition and Renovation project includes detention expansion. Those details explain local custody operations but do not create a BOP institution in the county.
A 2021 county study described the former work-release area as repurposed for other uses. It should not be treated as an active federal or local work-release facility. Federal prisoners may be held in many types of facilities under federal authority, yet the correct release proof still comes from the federal record, the federal court, and the custodian that executed the event.
The HCSO inmate lookup is app-directed and does not provide a desktop federal-release archive. If a federal detainee vanishes from that local surface, call the Detention Center and identify the receiver. USMS may remain the custodian before BOP designation, which explains why an immediate BOP search can return no matching prisoner.
Note: Facility location and legal custodian are different facts, so confirm the agency responsible for the exact custody episode.
Resolve Henderson Federal Release Conflicts
Start with identity when BOP, HCSO, and the federal docket appear inconsistent. Match the BOP register number, county booking number, full name, and case. Then arrange the events by agency time. A local transfer can occur before BOP designation, and a sentenced federal defendant may remain in USMS custody while the BOP locator has no current row.
A later BOP “Released” status ends the displayed BOP episode only. Read the federal judgment for supervised release and check any named detainer. If the local release sheet names a receiver, follow that agency even when the BOP row looks final. Written proof should retain the source, observation date, release date, and exact status so that an update does not erase the earlier context.
